About the Column of Zderad

Street Jánská

You may know me from history class.

Or you should know me. I'm the first king of Bohemia, Vratislav I. I managed to rule the whole kingdom, but I didn't know much about my family. My brother Conrad, who lived in Brno Castle, was so allied with my enemies that I came to punish him with my whole army.

We set up camp by the Svitava River and in the evening a meeting was held in my tent. The attack was to be led by my favourite courtier Zderad of Švábenice, who warned the knights against Conrad's army. We must be very careful, gentlemen. Not that any of you will go swimming again. Zderad was referring to an event that happened only a few years ago.

During the expedition against the German Emperor, my son Břetislav could not resist, took off his armour and jumped into the Elbe River in the sultry summer. The naked prince was soon captured by the Emperor's soldiers and we had to buy him for expensive money. It's a shame to remember. Everyone in the tent laughed and promised not to make the same mistake again. Only one person frowned.

My son, who was in the tent as well. He was a flighty boy, and he was annoyed by every stupid thing. So he decided to punish Zderad's insult. In the evening, when everyone was asleep, he and his cronies came to his tent and stabbed my courtier with a sword. I was left with nothing but tears.

I punished my son and had a pillar erected on the site of Zderad's death, which stands there to this day.
