About the stone maiden

Street Jánská

You can tell your story, but it's going to be sad. Terribly. The heart would shrink at the story. I cried like a turtle when I first heard it.

There was a beautiful girl in Brno called Johanka. She was a complete orphan, so one of the lords of the council took her in. For several years she worked in his house as a maid. The councillor was still kind to her, but his wife was worse. She was a terrible woman. She drove Johanna around wherever she could. It was always: go there, do this, bring that. And all wrong.

When the councilman died, the woman decided she didn't want the unfortunate girl in the house anymore. So she chose a groom for her. An old stinker, of course, so ugly that the other girls avoided him. Joan didn't want a groom, even though she knew she'd have hell on earth. She was in love with a boy from the neighborhood. But what could the poor orphan offer?

The young man's mother, i.e. his mother-in-law, hated Johanna as much as the widow of the councillor. The two hags agreed to accuse the girl of witchcraft. Surely the alderman didn't just die. She was the one who put the spell on him. They went to the town hall with their accusation and the councilmen, well, the men, as it were, sent soldiers after Joan. They caught her just as she was drawing water at the well. Joan heard the accusation and that she would be tortured into confessing. She realized her misfortune and jumped into the well, where she drowned.

She is called the Stone Maiden today because Johanna's boy had a statue of her created in her memory, which is still in the house today.
