Visit the shelter originally meant only for the chosen few

The original air-raid shelter was built during World War II as a shelter from the American and Soviet bombing of Brno. Since 1946, it was used by the Löwy and Šmíd wine wholesaler, which was seized by the communists two days after the coup in February 1948. The atomic shelter was completed in 1959, its capacity was to hold up to 500 people important for the management of the city and the region for three days. In 2016, the shelter, located right in the center of the city, was opened to the public as a rare technical monument. The tour of the exhibition is individual, you will be guided by a map that you will receive at the entrance. By prior arrangement, you can also use the services of a guide. The route is supplemented by projections and QR codes with links to videos about the history and fate of people connected with this place. The technical part of the exhibition consists of the facilities of the shelter: a diesel generator, a filter room and a telephone exchange. The exposition also includes the doors of the death cells from the former prison in Cejl, Brno, with messages from those sentenced to death. If you have strong nerves, you should definitely try the night excursions focused on the technical background of the shelter.
