The corridor under B\u011bhounsk\u00e1 Street was discovered in 1999. An excavation made in the pavement near the Augustinian monastery on Moravsk\u00e9 n\u00e1m\u011bst\u00ed revealed a semi-buried corridor which, after the excavation, measures almost 80 m. The western end is located at the level of the entrance to the Scala cinema and the eastern end ends in a sloping wall under the passage of B\u011bhounsk\u00e1 Street into the park. This was not the last discovery. After breaking through the sloping wall, a passageway was discovered, which runs for about 90 m under the park to the Jan\u00e1\u010dek Theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In order to find out the reason for the creation of these buildings, we have to go back to the 18th century, to the time when the prior of the Augustinian monastery held lengthy negotiations with the military fortification commission and the town administration about filling in the moat between the monastery and the town. They wanted to build the south wing of the monastery over it. In 1731, the filling in of the moat was finally permitted on the condition that the monastery would ensure that the municipal canal and water supply, which then ran under the town moat, would not be damaged by the proposed construction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A kind of protective tunnel was built over the sewer flowing through the ditch, which was then filled in. The adit lying under the park is probably a relocated branch of the Kartouz water pipeline, which brought water from the King's Field to the Merkur Fountain on Svoboda Square. Both structures were therefore built at the same time in 1731. The protective corridor, which is both 2.4 m high and wide, was built with exceptional craftsmanship and precision. The vertical walls supporting the brick vault are made of pinkish stones from the Brno igneous rock and supplemented with brick fragments with filigree care, reminiscent of a mosaic. Even the water shaft was made with great quality. It is 1 m wide, variable in height from 1.2 to 2 m, and runs 6 m below ground level. It descends towards the city and ends at the level of the Roosevelt Street tramway.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
