The trio of water tanks is a European unique

An experience like from another world of long-lost civilizations or scenes from computer games. That's how visitors perceive this unique technical monument, which was nearly forgotten and narrowly escaped demolition. Two brick and one concrete water tank served their purpose until 1997, and in 2019, they were successfully placed under heritage protection and gradually made accessible to the public. The complete trio of water tanks was sensitively opened to the public in March 2024, and the public can view them in almost their original condition. Visitors preferring expert explanations as well as individual tourists who want to explore the entire area, including the revitalized park on their own, will find something to appreciate.

1874

The water tanks on Žlutý kopec were built for the so-called Pisárecký water supply system, which strengthened the insufficient water supply system of the expanding city. The first brick water tank was created in 1874 according to the design of London builder Thomas Docwra. It has a square floor plan of 45×45 meters and a height of 6 and a half meters. Inspired by English water management structures, it stands out with a unique construction and a sophisticated support system. The floor is not flat but consists of so-called counter-arches, which, together with the walls and barrel vaults, create a perfectly sustainable and statically functional whole. The regular and precise construction gives the impression of an infinite and ever-receding space and is built from hand-made fired bricks.

1894

To respond to the continuously growing consumption of the city's inhabitants, the second brick tank was constructed in 1894 according to the design of Brno engineer Emil Procházka. This water tank has a considerably simpler structure with a concrete bottom, from which rises a forest of seventy pillars of semi-circularly arched arcades supporting a system of barrel vaults. With dimensions of 35×55 meters, it was the largest underground structure in Brno at the time and also the last brick water tank that was built there.

1917

The third and youngest water tank was completed in 1917. It consists of two adjacent tanks made of monolithic concrete, supported by a system of 87 concrete pillars. In total, the water tanks on Žlutý kopec had a volume of more than 30 million liters. Although it was soon discovered that the water quality was not satisfactory, these monumental domes served as sources of utility water until 1997.
