Bastion
Few things are as interesting when visiting a castle as its fortifications. Let alone the one that was built at a frantic pace, in just two years, to make Špilberk ready for the return of the Swedish troops in May 1645. The body of the so-called south-west bastion consisted of internal stonework, the outer reinforcement was made of brick and hid an ingenious system of walls, corridors and interrogation chambers. After the Swedish siege, the bastion was restored almost to its original form and lasted until 1809, when Napoleon had it shot down. Only part of the tunnel passage and the gate with the portal remain, and the remains of the original foundations can be seen in the bowels of the bastion.

Lapidarium
Špilberk Castle is not only a medieval jewel, it also contains two impressive water reservoirs from 1870 and 1900. They fulfilled an important function in their time and were the lifeblood of the city centre, supplying essential water for everyday life. They were completely renovated between 2017 and 2019, and you can now enjoy their technical beauty during tours, as well as admire the more than three dozen historic stone artefacts on display. The sightseeing tour is now also supplemented with interactive and audiovisual elements that will complete the atmosphere and introduce visitors to the history of the oldest modern water reservoir in Brno.
