Water Tanks on Petrov

In Denisovývh sadech (Denis Gardens) today we can see two preserved masonry reservoirs on the defence walls that were put into operation in 1820.

The southwestern slope of Petrov, called Puhlík, originally fell very steeply to the marshy meadow by the Svratec dam. In 1415, the town council agreed with Prokop of Písek, who had built a waterworks in Čáslav, and the wealthy Brno patrician Václav Haas to use his own money to build a waterworks from the Svratka across Puhlík. The water pipeline was supposed to supply the fountains at the Upper and Lower Market, to bring water to breweries and individual houses. In 1416, King Wenceslas IV confirmed the arrangement and the first water supply system was built in Brno. Water was taken from the Svratka embankment and pumped by a pump that stood at the so-called Lampl mill (approximately at the site of today's spa on Kopečná) to a height of 140 feet (44.2 m) to the water reservoir on Puhlík. The pipe system was originally wooden (drilled pipes made of pine wood, connected by short iron cylinders), later stone and iron. The water passed through a complex system of settling tanks and overflow chambers to the wooden water tanks and from there through Starobrněnská Street to the town.

In 1818, when the slope of Petrovský slope was modified to Denisovy sady, the old water tank was removed and replaced by a new wooden one. At the same time, two new, still preserved brick water tanks were built on the parkland wall and put into operation in 1820. They are accessed by a stone walkway along the building, accessible from the Bishop's garden.

The building consists of two chambers 16 m and 17 m long, 6 m wide. The space is vaulted (8 m above the floor), on which the terrace of the bishop's garden lies. In 1873, this waterworks was abandoned as the water system was completely rebuilt. Since then, the building has not been used and is gradually falling into disrepair. However, the size of this space, which resembles an empty cathedral, directly invites architects and builders to consider the possibility of its future use.

Voucher to the ossuary of St. James

The purchased voucher to the Labyrinth under the Green Market must be exchanged for a ticket in person at the Zelný trh 21 underground ticket office during its validity period.
